Blu-Ray Sales Developing Nicely

Quote:
The Blu-ray Disc player industry is seeing increased sales over the past two and a half years. Since the technology was unveiled, 10.7 million players (including Playstation 3s) have been shipped to retail stores across the US. The 2008 sales have increased three-fold compared to 2007 estimates.

According to Adams Media Research, the household penetration for Blu-ray Disc players is 8% after slightly less than three years on the market. Compare this to the three-year estimates of about 3% for Color TV, 2% for CDs and 4% for DVDs, and Blu-rays are looking to be a rapidly growing industry.

Software sales for Blu-ray Disc players are increasing as well. This past October was the first month to hit 2 million disc sales, which increased to 8 million by December. At the close of 2008, disc sales stood at 24.09 million for the year, bringing the total since launch to over 30 million sales.

Future Blu-ray Disc players are using the “BD-Live” technology which allows users to interact with the player over a broadband network. And there will be a significant addition to the 53 disc titles which already allow a digital copy to be downloaded and viewed on mobile devices.

Sales of Blu-ray Disc players are projected to increase two to three fold in the next year, according to Adams Media Research.

I've said this several times in various threads around here proclaiming BR to a failure.

What makes it even more impressive is that DVD launched with the backdrop of one of the greatest economic expansions in history. BR.....not so much.

Yeah, it's obviously not a failure. And I expect it would be doing even better if it didn't have to go through the format war at the start.

I don't buy it.
Maybe they're including the earliest DVD days where a standard couldn't even be agreed upon, because otherwise I don't believe Blu Ray players are nearly as popular as DVD's were early on. DVD was test-marketted in like 1997-1998 or something in the US, but by 2001 DVD had to be doing better than Blu Ray is now.
Hell, are they not counting PS2's as DVD players while they're counting PS3's as Blu Ray players? Blu Ray had a more solid entry into the global market, basically spearheaded by the PS3, so maybe if you technically take its day one vs DVD's, you can come up with the conclusion it's doing as well.
But I've yet to meet a darned person that owns a Blu Ray player and I'm having a hard time thinking it's doing as good as DVD did.

DVD really took a long while to catch on so it isn't a big surprise. In fact I believe when the PS2 launched years later after the introduction of DVD it helped really push it into the mainstream as it was a cheap DVD player. Kind of the same deal with the PS3 but it was available pretty much from the get go.

I've no doubt that BluRay will replace DVD, but I doubt it will be as successful with competition from digital distribution.
