This goes hand in hand with the recent column posted here (Though I actually was going to post this before I read that...) but I wanted everyone's opinions on this.

I've been thinking about getting my GF a DS for Christmas. She's far from a hardcore gamer, but really likes the Gamecube. Particularly Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon & the Mario games.

With that said, at $130 plus whatever for a game it'll make this a relatively big Christmas gift. I've already gotten her all the normal crap in previous years, so it's not like I'd be skipping out on some jewelry or something for the DS, but I'm curious if others have done this?

We're doing a lot of travel post holidays and I think it would be fun for both of us to have DSes to play together, and I think she could play it on her lunch breaks and stuff.

However, I recently have gotten super hyped about the DS itself, and am a little afraid that maybe I'm pushing my excitement into the thought that it would be good for her too.

Reading the column, it lists 90% DS games which makes me more wanting to do this, but I'd love some insight from fellow DS gamers.

Thanks.

I have two DS' and my wife doesn't play it that much. Mostly we play multiplayer Tetris and Zoo Keeper. It's GREAT to have two when you travel though.

My wife was addicted to AC on the GC (probably quadroupled or more the amount of time I spent on the game). However she only played AC on the DS one night. She seems to get into hardcore gaming moods every year or so. Used to be addicted to Sim City and used to be VERY addicted to The Sims on her Mac. She couldn't stand Harvest Moon BTW.

Judging by my wife your GF might no use it much. You may just be overly excited about the DS. What I suggest is to get it as a gift for traveling but not as "The Big Christmas Gift."

Thanks for that Will.

I'll certainly take what you said into consideration. However, does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Would love to hear.

A pink DS Lite would be a great gift. Considering that it's such a casual handheld, with such a diverse library of games, I'm sure there's plenty of content that your GF would love. If there's nothing else that she'd want (or that she's hinted at wanting) then I don't see any reason why you shouldn't go for it.

My fiancee loves hers - I bought her the original at launch and she thought it was okay and then stole my copy of Feel the Magic and would not give it back. She's since traded it in for the DS Lite and cracks out on it frequently. Her drugs of choice: New Super Mario, Rocket Slime and Contact. She's hyped for FF3 and Zelda as well. I would vote "yes."

And Tetris 2 player is awesome.

Your GF will prefer girl things instead, like something shiny, or something that she can drive.

Thanks for the continued help guys. I'm certainly leaning towards "Yes" but I will continue to listen to all feedback, positive or negative.

Someone mentioned a PINK DS Lite, which has me wondering about that as well. Should I get her a pink one? She's not really in love with the color pink by any means, but it would help us tell who's DS is whos. Or should I go with black, or the white (Same as mine).

If I was a chick, I'd totally want the pink one, but I am curious if a lot of girls are actually picking up pink ones or if they are just getting regular DSes.

Again, thanks for all the feedback and keep letting me know. I've still got some time before Xmas shopping, so I definately would like to have an informed opinion about both issues.

when my fiancee bought the brighter GBA SP in blue, the sales clerk asked her if she knew that it was available in pink. she was not amused. if she's not a fan of pink, i'd skip it. white is a safe choice; black comes in second.

Truth. I merely said pink because it's the obvious choice for girls. However, if that's not her thing, go with black. I'm sure she'd like it just as much.

Hell, maybe you could get the black one for yourself and give her the white one.

i bought my girl a DS when it came out and she played nintendogs mario kart and AC for a while, then kinda quit playing it. she has expressed wanting to play it more (more free time?) and wanting to trade in for a pink ds lite.

keep in mind my girlfriend isnt a big gamer, only had a 64 and played pretty much nothing but mario kart and diddy kong racing. youre girl seems much more into games so i think shed love a DS.

If she likes games, and I mean likes them, not just tolerates the occasional one to try to make you happy, then yes.

If she does not really get into them, then no.

You have to figure out if she appears to like them for your sake or likes them independant of you. You are on the right track of wondering if you are pushing your excitement off onto her.

Yeah, get her like a pink DS package, with Mario Kart DS, Clubhouse Games, and Anmal Crossing: Wild World. That's an ideal Christmas present right there.

Lucky bastard, having a girl who likes games.

Remember Homer's bowling ball present for Marge? That is what this thread is all about.
