Happy Belated B-Day to the Greatest Game of All Time (Dedication to QUAKE)

June 22nd, 1996 - A day that will live on... famously! From a newsgroup on a server far far away... and many FTPs as well.... came the greatest game of all time

Reminder from Slashdot
http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl...55244&from=rss

History of Quake:
http://www.clanberries.com/misc/quake_history.htm

Who can forget the first time you saw the future of gaming in:
- Beautiful 3D Accelerated Graphics
- True 3D Environments
- Internet Network Multiplayer
- 3D Sound
- The first step to modern modding and total conversions
- Three words: Threewave Capture the Flag
- Some more words: Rocket/Clan Arena, (Mega) Team Fortress, Quake Rally, Get Rich Quake

Not only that, but Quake was the first major open source game engine release ever. A few others followed suit after, like Descent 1/2 and Duke 3D, but nothing has had the sheer success that the Quake engine GPL releases have had.

Ahh... the glory days.

Well, its time to bring it out of retirement. Time to once again enjoy the absolute best in FPS gameplay. There is not an FPS in existance that is as perfectly tight as the original Quake. None. Period. The game has a feel to it that you just can't get anywhere else.

Ways to enjoy the glory again.

Step 1: Whip out your Quake CD, or go download the shareware version.
http://www.idsoftware.com/games/quak...e_section=demo

Step 2: Get FuhQuake (the standard in current Quake 1 engines, and the best bet for playing online today. Tons of scriptablity for online play, and much improved graphics and hud and ingame browser)

Windows/Linux: http://fuhquake.net/
Mac OS X (Universal Binary): http://dreamolers.binaryriot.org/fuhquake/

Step 3: MODS

CustomTF: Team fortress has splintered in many directions. There is vanilla, mega, beyond etc, but the most used version is the Aussie inspired version they use for tourney play (cause TF is huge down there). Not to be confused with the abomination of a game known as Team Fortress Classic. Best Mod of all Time!

Rocket Arena: The greatest game of team/tournament DM you will ever play. Period. (files at the bottom)

Quake Revitalization: all new models and textures, make the game look much sharper. Get it now.

Tenebrae: Self / dynamic shadowing, stencil buffering, pixel shading... Quake 1 style

Quakanoid: Exactly what you think

Battlemech: top down mech goodness!

Jeht: New-ish DM with tons of new guns and alt-fires.

Screenshots:

Great free games given to us by Quake source releases

Nexuiz: Kind of like an Unreal Tournament meets Quake 1

Tremulous: Ever play Natural Selection? Kind of like that. Aliens vs Marines. Evolution vs Upgrades.

Warsow: Cel-Shaded DM/CTF based FPS that exemplifies the bunny hopping nature and adds stuff like wall jumping etc. Extremely nice.

OTHER STUFF:

http://www.quakesrc.org - THE place for Quake Source related information

Quake Done Quick: With a Vengeance: Quake Beaten on NIGHTMARE in 12 minutes 23 seconds. Quite the feat of gaming awesomeness and finesse.
http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/qdq/ - other speed demos for Quake

Team Fortress Done Extreme 2: Why Quake TF is the greatest mod of all time.

Quake is 100% Cross platform. Linux, Mac, Windows.... DOS ... PALM, GBA, DS, PSP, etc etc etc

Oh, and without Quake, you could erase Half-Life from your memory - Don't you forget it! Quake had possibly the single biggest impact in gaming since Super Mario Bros.

Pick up the great Masters of Doom book for more insight to this great game

Quake was awesome, sound design and soundtrack by Trent Reznor too

Shut your pie hole.

Doom is great, but its gameplay doesn't stand like Quake's does.

Same here...Then again, I have only really played Half-Life on PC, as far as 3D FPS goes....I think I'll get into some Quake though.

Jeff great memories indeed. I use to lan this game. Man good times.
Although its legendary I cannot see my self reinstalling it to play once again even with the upgrades. I've retired this disc just like StarCraft. Ive beaten and played it to a pulp and now its in Hunters hall of Valhalla.

Haha, I am not yet sure if I'm gonna go back into it for multi, but I'm definitely running through the SP at least one last time

I'm definitely really digging Warsow though... and will give Nexuiz and Tremulous more time when they are universal binaries.

Fond, fond memories of Quake. I remember when I first started playing it at my friend's ISP office after hours (they had a T1 way back then). For some reason I remember this one little server called Bull Mastiff that some guy always had running. It was that little level with a lot of water in it (I think you see some shamblers in it in the single player game). Not a lot of people were ever on that server.

Then a little later we started seeing some mods like the early (pre threewave) CTF that used the big keys as flags (your axe was a grapple hook), as well as 'Capture the Skrag'. Then things like Threewave CTF and GL Quake came out.

I used to get on a lot of CTF servers and get spanked by the NBI clan repeatedly. I liked Quake2 to an extent, but I really don't get into any of the Quake games after that.

Quake 1 is the best by far.

I'd say Quake 3 or 4 after that

Quake 2 last.
