Graphic Novels...

Ok, so I've gotten back into comic books after 15 years. Sort of.

Just collected volumes.

So far I have V for Vendetta, The Maxx 1, 2, 5 (3 & 4 are in the mail), and 3 Sandman hardcover volumes I still had kickin' around from long ago (World's End, The Kindly Ones and Brief Lives...had two more but I can't find them).

I plan on getting Watchmen next, then The Dark Knight Returns, then this complete Sin City collection sometime later.

I also may check out the collected volumes of Hellraiser, and want to get the whole The Sandman series eventually.

Anyone have anything to recommend besides those in the way of adult graphic novels?

edit: I want to add that The Maxx kinda sucks. It was cooler back when I was 11.

Do you want any superhero stories or just mature comics?

Definitely finish that Sandman collection.
Batman: The Long Halloween
Batman: Year One
House of M

As for monthly comics: Runaways(caters more to teens I guess, but I like it) and The Ultimates 2, currently one of the best comics series around.

That's pretty much all that I've been reading lately.

Daredevil: Born Again is an absolute must! All Frank Miller Daredevil is great, but this is one of the best stories ever. For my money, it's the greatest Marvel story, period.

Also, if you want to go further into Batman at some point, get Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. The Killing Joke is also a must-read, but it's currently out of print in standalone format. However, you can get it in DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore, which also has the wonderful Superman: Whatever Happened the Man of Tomorrow? two-parter.

Would you say House of M is worth collectng at this point, PeRfEk? I never read any of it. I always heard good stuff though.

Oh and off-topic but somewhat relevant... Justice League and Batman Beyond Season One DVD sets come out March 21! Woohoo!

Find and buy the 'Preacher', possibly my favorite graphic novel ever. Also, try and grab Frank Miller and Geoff Darrow's 'Hard Boiled', it's really a masterpiece in all senses of the word.

I also found 'Transmetropolitan' to be very entertaining, if not a bit silly on the story end of things.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll be sure to check 'em out.

I only want mature/adult graphic novels that are complete (so I can read 'em at my own leisure, not interested in anything monthly).

I'm not a big comic/graphic novel fane, but i'd recommend Hellboy. Nice stories and an excellent art style.

...Screw that. Here's what you do: put up one billboard. Then simply pay a sniper to assassinate someone of global importance when they pass in front of it. Bingo! The clip will run on an endless loop on every news channel in the world, for eternity. Even as viewers gasp in horror watching the victim's head explode like a watermelon, they'll simultaneously be thinking "What's that? New Plum-Flavoured Pepsi? Cool!" each time a chunk of skull flies past your logo.

I was thinking about Hellboy, but I'm not sure. The movie sucked royally, but that doesn't mean much.

Anyone read the Silent Hill volumes? I see there's three out.

It's a good read and worth collecting if you're interested in what's happenin in the Marvel universe right now. I think there's a trade paperback out now too.

And everyone needs to check out Ultimates 2! If you don't feel like collecting the monthly issues, then you need to pick up the paperback whenever it releases. The last issue was just amazing.

Just check out this short little review from IGN.

The Maxx sucked.

I just gave up reading the last 20 or so pages in the final volume. I just didn't care about the characters. I can’t believe I read as much as I did...I kept hoping it would get better, I guess.

It started out as a sort of black super hero comedy, and turned into this boring melodramatic bouts of dialogue between uninteresting characters. See...The Maxx was one of the last series of comics I got into before quitting comics. I only read the first 6 or 8 issues, and I was always curious to see how it turned out..

Turned out to be a waste of money.

V for Vendetta was pretty cool. Nothing really too special, and the art looks really dated (it was originally black & white, and it’s printed on cheap pulp paper for some reason).

I’m about half way through Watchmen, and it’s truly amazing. I was a little skeptical simply because of the praise it’s gotten (I’m like that) - but it truly is the pinnacle of the graphic novel.

It’s simply an amazing work of fiction, on every level. Time Magazine is right - It really does deserve to called one of the best novels of all time.

I have Dark Knight Returns coming in the mail.

Liberty and Justice, The Marvels, and Kingdom Come. Art by Alex Ross, the best in the biz.

Glad to hear you're liking Watchmen. IMO, it really is the best comic story ever. And good pick on DKR.

You might also give a look to Ex Machina.

It's about a guy who did a brief run as a superhero prior to getting elected mayor of NYC. The only real reason he got elected mayor was for his heroics on 9/11, but he's not at all suited for the job. The story handles what would happen if a superhero became an elected official. It's very witty and intelligent storytelling, but it may not be for everyone. The TPBs are only $10 a pop, so it won't set you back too much to give one a shot. I'm really enjoying it.

You can download the first issues of Ex Machina and Y: The Last Man, which Nataku recommended, from the links below.
