Mario Kart DS Impressions
On Thursday, the journos had a LARGE chunk of time to devote to nothing but Mario Kart via Wifi and Mario Kart via local wireless. I don't remember exactly how long, but it was something like two hours... possibly more.
So after lunch during our break, what did we do? Play more Mario Kart. On the shuttle to dinner, our DSs came out for more Mario Kart. AT dinner there were games going on. Afterwards in the hotel lobby a group of eight of us played until our batteries died in the middle of the night. Then in bed I booted up 1P (for the first time).
I think a lot of people take the 8 player multiplayer for granted. 8 player Mario Kart battle is nothing to scoff at. I know it was possible with double dash, but it was extremely prohibitively difficult to set up, whereas with mario kart DS its shockingly simple.
You have no idea how fun it was for all of us to be sprawled out in different sections of the lounge and shout "Ooohhhh!" at the same moment as we all got zapped by lightning simultaneously.
The game feels tight. Powerslides begin with a hop. The 16 new courses are fantastic. The (very lengthy) mission mode doesn't feel gimmicky and is very varied... the boss battles are a lot of fun. Multiplayer is incredibly easy to set up, and is feature-rich (I dig 4on4 team battles).
I'm not really sure what else can be said. I feel that Mario Kart DS is the definitive entry in the series. If MKDS is wrong, I don't want to be right
